During InFocus this year, the Oracle JDE Product Teams gave us a sneak peek of the new and exciting features now available in Tools 9.2.5. As a CNC myself, I enjoyed attending and presenting on several virtual sessions that showcased the tools, technologies and approaches that others are using to simplify, automate and optimize some of the common system administration tasks and processes.

So here are just a few features that I can’t wait to explore.

Virtual Batch Queues and Batch Resubmission

Many E1 users and CNCs have dreamed of being able to re-run failed jobs without needing to re-enter data selection, sequencing and processing options or being able to move jobs to another server so they complete on time – so this long-awaited feature is one that the JDE Tech community is very excited to see in the latest Tools Release.

Clayton Seeley and John Holder introduced Virtual Batch Queues and Batch Resubmission, which helps users and CNCs achieve more flexibility, high availability and better system performance while optimizing batch job processing.

Key Highlights:

• Move batch jobs from one server to another (jobs that have not started running yet)
• Load balance job submissions across multiple batch servers
• Resubmit failed jobs with the originally used criteria (Data selection, PO values, etc.)
• Enforce job queue capacity limits across multiple servers

Considerations:

• Virtual Batch Queue functionality is not available for IBM i (IBM i uses native OS queues and not very common to have multiple IBM i Batch Servers)
• All servers that are part of a Virtual Batch host group must be on the same platform and time zone

OMW and Package Builds from the Web

At first glance, this feature sounds simple, but behind the scenes, a lot of changes have been made to bring this to life.

Key Highlights:

OMW – The following operations in OMW can now be done via the web in Tools 9.2.5

•  All OMW operations other than those that involve a development client (check out, get, check in, restore etc.) can be done from the web
• Create projects, add /remove objects and users to and from projects
• Transfer projects

Package Builds

• Assemble, build, and deploy client/server packages from the web
• Client packages will rely on a new service running on the deployment server

These enhancements will certainly make these tasks easier for System Admins by eliminating the dependency on FAT clients to do these operations.

Additionally, now that these applications and functions are web-enabled, a whole new world of opportunity for digital transformation has been realized, especially when it comes to automation and mobility.

Development Client Simplification

Many CNCs and System Admins are challenged with maintaining and setting up development clients – a time-consuming and tedious task. Not to mention the resource requirements for storage and memory – there is a whole Oracle database instance on each FAT client after all 😉

Tools 9.2.5 brings about some much-needed simplification to the development (or FAT) client.

Key Highlights:

–         A local database is no longer needed on the development client (i.e. local Oracle Database). This means reduced space requirements, reduced memory required and faster install times

–         User Spec Repository Tables in Central Objects Datasource in place of local specs on FAT client for development. This would also allow portable development where you can start work on one dev client and pick it up on another (if it’s not business function changes)
